The year 2019 marked my 10th year as a fitness business owner. Helping people realize their physical transformations has been my passion since I left my very first job as a research analyst, which I had gotten right out of college. As the New Year began, little did I know things were about to change in such a major way.
To backtrack a few months, towards the end of 2018 I had been dealing with client and member complaints about my business partner’s conduct. It had been going on for a while, but I tried to handle it by just putting out the fires he lit left and right, until one day, I could not take it anymore. My partnership responsibilities were creating marketing campaigns and establishing systems so that the business could run more effectively, but the escalating complaints were consuming all of my time and obstructing my ability to move the business forward.
After assessing the situation, I decided I had to buyout my business partner. I thought it was going to be easy, quick, and smooth. He would simply sign the papers, take the money, and go on with his life. I was dead wrong.
As he refused to listen to reason, I realized that breaking up with a business partner is sort of like going through a divorce. Now, I don’t take divorce lightly by any measure; I don’t plan to go through one, ever, but that is how the process felt at the time: a dissolution of shared property. After giving him a solid offer, he came back and basically offered me nothing! At this point, the business was slowly dying and I just wanted to be done with all of the drama.
One day, sitting on the couch with my husband after we had put the kids to bed, I felt this sense of calmness and peace about letting the business go.
The Decision That Changed Everything
Our lawyer advised us to file for bankruptcy so that when the business inevitably failed (which it did), we wouldn’t be liable for any of the contracts we had signed on the business’s behalf.
So, here I was, after 10 years of pouring my heart, soul, and pretty much everything I’ve got into my fitness business, I had nothing to show for it. With no funds to start anything new or even to live off of, we swallowed our pride; took up my sister’s offer to borrow money from her, and moved back to California from Louisiana. We moved in with my parents. It was a humbling and sobering experience, to say the least. Our first night at my parent’s house I cried myself to sleep, feeling sorry for myself. At that moment, I felt like I had nothing to offer the world. Then, I quickly realized that was a lie!
I was grateful for our friends’ support during what could have been a devastating experience. Because most of them are intuitive (some might even say prescient), they helped us see things from different perspectives and gave us insights as to why this was happening to us. This is why I’m a firm believer that we are the average of the 5 people we hang out with the most. Our influencers matter tremendously!
Entrepreneurship brings many gifts
One of the major ones is self-growth.
Who I’ve become as a person, because of the many business challenges I have overcome is the ultimate prize to me. The bankruptcy may have taken away our ability to borrow money and all the cash reserves we had, but it couldn’t take away all the skills I’ve developed over all those years, or my ability to see the positive side of every challenge!
I came to understand that I had gotten the better end of the deal, because we were now debt-free, but I still had all my business experience, which I could now apply to any business I decided to pursue.
Almost an entire year had passed and I still hadn’t figured out my next business move. I immersed myself in entrepreneurial communities, looking for answers. There were times when I felt useless. I spent my days learning, but had nowhere to apply all my new skills and education. I was very frustrated.
Something profound finding me…
One of the things I did during my transition (figuring out what I wanted to do with my life) time was I meditated a lot. This was the time when I was able to develop my consistent meditation practice because…really…I didn’t have anything else to do. Plus, I’m a firm believer that our energy attracts what we want in our life. After having read Dr. Joe Dispenza’s books and looking at all the scientific research he has done to prove that meditation works, I was hooked! At the end of one of his guided meditations, he says, “fill this center with the anticipation and expectation of something profound finding you.”
Then, one day…
Then, one day in April 2020, I received an email from Jason Fladlien. I had participated in a challenge in December 2019, where he had been a guest. I was totally impressed with his brilliance. In fact, I did that challenge, because I remembered being impressed by him when I heard him speak at an event I had gone to a couple of years earlier. Thankfully, he kept up with his email list and I opened every single email he sent out. I was a sponge, soaking up everything to get me out of my funk. In this one email, he was announcing a new program he was doing for affiliate marketers. This really struck home for me. Ever since I got out of college, I had my sights set on affiliate marketing, but I had never done anything about it; I had been so busy building up my fitness business. After watching the webinar, I knew I had to join the program. I’m so glad I did because you wouldn’t be reading my story now if it hadn’t been for that one email.
The strategy of Jason’s program was to 4x our investment in the program after our first month. I did! I was hooked and on fire. I felt like everything I just went through in the past year was worth it just so I could go full force into affiliate marketing. I found a home in this online community. We speak the same language. I have met people who love marketing as much as I do and I am now able to get help in any area I need (including tech help), because of the vast experience over 500 affiliate marketers bring to the table. On top of that, I have created my very first online course, which earned an exclusivity deal with Jason’s company, because of its uniqueness and newbie-friendly approach to organic (free) marketing.
Just as I expected, all the business and people skills I’ve developed over the last 10 years of being an entrepreneur are paying off. This is the reason I decided to create a marketing and sales training platform that everyone (even newbies in third world countries like the one I came from) can afford and make money immediately by using it. In this platform, you will learn the fundamental skills you’ll need to be an entrepreneur while you make money and help others to do the same. To find out more about this platform, click here.
